Chapter Three

In his dreams, Nazir called his name.

Weird, because usually that was Clive’s job. Normally, Clive would be there with him, calling his name in tones James couldn’t decipher.

“James.”

That voice was deeper, closer. James frowned.

“James, wake up.”

Oh shit. He jerked upright, blinking against the bright light overheard. No wonder that dream didn’t make any sense. Nazir stood in the bedroom doorway.

“Wha—”

“Sorry. I knocked, but you didn’t answer so I let myself in.”

He didn’t sound sorry. Didn’t look it either, but what did James know? He swallowed, shaking his head. “It’s-that’s fine. It’s your house too." Nazir’s expression didn’t change from that deceptively calm face he wore. James made to get out of the sleeping bag until he remembered he only wore boxers underneath the covers. Shit. “Uh—”

“I brought dinner,” Nazir said softly. “Curry goat. Come down when you’re ready.”

He turned away and James waited until he heard footsteps stomping down the stairs before getting up and putting on a pair of black lounge pants and a stretched-out red t-shirt. He stepped into the bathroom just long enough to splash water on his face and gargle with a little mouthwash then made his way downstairs.

It wouldn’t do anyone any good for him to acknowledge the hard-on he had to thumb, hoping feverishly that it would subside before he reached Nazir. No sense in thinking about the unsettled situation in his belly that had him worrying if he’d be able to handle eating.

In the dining room, he found Nazir already seated. Not at the head of the table where Clive sat for the entirety of his and James’ relationship. James glanced over to the clock on the wall.

7:30 on the nose. Shit. He’d slept the day away.

He cleared his throat and pulled out the chair opposite Nazir, sitting before he asked, “Did you do what I asked?”

Nazir glanced up from the food he was dishing out. “What did you ask?”

“Are you serious?” Son of a— James pursed his lips. “Call off Serch, Nazir.”

The other man pushed a plate toward James piled high with rice and curried goat along with some kind of green salad. He took it with a grateful nod.

“Serch is staying,” Nazir said after James had taken his first mouth-watering bite. “I need him around to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m a grown man,” James snapped, the white plastic fork falling from his grip back onto the plate. “Despite what your father told you, I do not need looking after.”

Nazir sipped his water, watching him. James couldn't read him. He never could. After all this, he still wasn’t sure if Nazir was as affected as he was. If he was as bogged down with the guilt as James was. Nazir didn’t respond to him, he just sat there chewing slowly. James tried not to stare at him.

He tried not to notice the way he licked his lips, but every swipe that got Nazir’s bottom lip wet quickened James’ heartbeat. Every time Nazir swallowed, James had to smother a groan.

This was impossible. No matter how much he tried, there was no changing this.
